Sweets for Spring

The previous owners of our house lived in it for over 40 years.  In that time, they did no landscaping except for a random clump of rhubarb we found in the back yard.  I was sad that we didn’t have any fruit trees or flowers, but I was more than happy with the rhubarb!  For the last two springs we’ve enjoyed harvesting our rhubarb and turning it into the sweetest of spring-time desserts.  This recipe is from Sunset’s Kitchen Cabinet Recipes, vol. 3, published in 1944.

When Kevin saw me chopping the rhubarb and strawberries, he immediately offered to make the dessert.  I think he knew it would turn out perfectly and wanted all the credit!  And, thanks to the awesome recipe and Kevin’s culinary skills, this was one of the best strawberry-rhubarb pies I’ve had.  Kevin and I agree that we would add less sugar than the recipe called for, as it was a little too sweet.  Just in case you needed a cute little comic to inspire you to make this yummy pie, here you go!

Did I mention that the colors of this pie were fantastic?  Thank you, Kevin for making such an awesome dessert!

This pie looks wonderful! In another month, we’ll be starting to pick strawberries at the family farm and I have a new patch of rhubarb down by the rock wall! I see this pie in my future! Thanks for the inspiration!

Strawberry rhubarb is wonderful pie…and it is my second favorite. Rhubarb is my first! Rhubarb raspberry competes for first, once in awhile! Looks great.

Thanks so much for reminding us it’s rhubarb and strawberry season. In the city we don’t see food growing very often so it’s easy to forget. The pie looks yummy, too. Need to give that a try. Thanks for stopping by — Jane F

That is one fabulous looking pie. This is my first visit to your blog. I had intended only to say hello but I was lured by some of your earlier posts. I really enjoy what you do here and I’ll be back as often as I can. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings…Mary
